ROLLING MEADOWS, IL — A Palatine teen accused of fatally shooting a man last month showed no emotion during a Tuesday hearing in Rolling Meadows juvenile court, The Daily Herald Reported. The 15-year-old, who is being held at Chicago's Juvenile Temporary Detention Center, has been charged with first-degree murder in the Feb. 1 death of 20-year-old Jose Castaneda, the news report said, adding that 16-year-old Andre Naydenov was also charged in the murder as prosecutors said he drove a silver BMW used in the shooting. Cook County Judge Steven Bernstein oversaw the short hearing, with the teen's mother and brother in attendance, along with the Castaneda family, according to the Daily Herald.
Naydenov, a freshman at Palatine High School, has been charged as an adult because of his age, and is being held in juvenile detention on $750,000 bail. According to The Daily Herald, prosecutors said Naydenov and the 15-year-old drove up and stopped at a gas station on Feb. 1 near the Silver Lakes Apartment Complex in Palatine Township around the same time Castaneda and his friend arrived after walking there. However, when Castaneda and his friend left, Naydenov and the 15-year-old followed them because the juvenile believed Castaneda and his friend were rival gang members and said they should "stomp" (hurt or kill) them, Naydenov later told police, according to the news report. Prosecutors said the 15-year-old fired multiple shots at Castaneda, hitting him in the back, while Naydenov drove.
The next court appearance for the 15-year-old is scheduled for April 9, while Naydenov will appear in adult court March 7, according to The Daily Herald.
